A few things that could be used to improve the connection users have with the site and increase attachment:

Profile bio box
Custom background banners 
Colored portraits (Custom portraits, whether user uploaded or by rank/reputation) 
Custom profile URLS
Music/video/image display on user profile (Maybe users top or highlighted post) 
Achievement system with interface upgrades given when achievements are unlocked by the user (Like steam's friend system) 
Besides site rank/reputation maybe a self identified rank like artist/musician/etc.
Profile badges/customization options for participating or contribution to events like NOF.
